"SCENERY.CFG file error" error on launch

"SCENERY.CFG file error. Local scenery directory (Addon Scenery\SCENERY) in scenery Area.038 not found" (or similar)
This can be caused by a missing or incorrectly installed addon.
Edit scenery.cfg[citation needed]
  1. Try installing the addon again. If problems persist, continue with the steps below.
  2. Edit <path-to-game>\scenery.cfg
  3. Go to [Area.038] (or the named area).
  4. Change Active=TRUE to Active=FALSE
  5. Restart the game.

Black screen when starting a flight (Windows 10)

The plane preview area is black, and starting the flight shows a black screen.
Force windowed mode in FS9.cfg[3][4]
  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Edit FS9.cfg.
  3. Change FULL_SCREEN=1 to FULL_SCREEN=0
  4. Run the game normally. The game will now run in windowed mode by default.
