Warnings

The macOS (OS X) version of this game does not work on macOS Catalina (version 10.15) or later due to the removal of support for 32-bit-only apps.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a singleplayer third-person action and hack and slash game in the Metal Gear series.

The game's Mac port was deactivated in 2017 .[1]

General information

Steam Community Discussions

Availability

All Windows versions require Steam DRM.
The Mac OS X version is no longer available and unplayable as the server for the DRM has been shut down.[2]

Downloadable content (DLC) and expansions

All DLCs from console versions are built-in.

Essential improvements

Skip intro videos

Modify a game file[3]
  1. Open <path-to-game>\METAL GEAR RISING REVENGEANCE.exe in a hex editor (e.g. HxD).
  2. Search for the following as hex
    • 8B 8D 8C 00 00 00 85 C9 74 13
  3. Replace it with
    • 8B 8D 8C 00 00 00 85 C9 EB 13
  4. Save the changes.

Game data

Configuration file(s) location

System Location
Windows C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\MGR\SaveData\
macOS (OS X)
Steam Play (Linux) <Steam-folder>/steamapps/compatdata/235460/pfx/[Note 1]

Save game data location

System Location
Windows C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\MGR\SaveData\MGR.sav
macOS (OS X) ~/Library/Application Support/Metal Gear Rising - Revengeance Steam/p_drive/User/Application Data/MGR/SaveData/MGR.sav
Steam Play (Linux) <Steam-folder>/steamapps/compatdata/235460/pfx/[Note 1]
The game uses a fixed path for its data instead of using the standard Windows variables, if the C: drive is missing or the aren't Documents folder under the user folder, the game will not be able to save and will crash.[4] Possible workarounds include manually creating empty Documents folder or using symbolic linking.

Save game cloud syncing

System Native Notes
Steam Cloud
Approx. 954 MB available.
Settings will sync too, except graphics settings.
Steam Cloud will not sync any files if the system doesn't have a C: drive.[5]
Also, if there is a C: drive but your Documents folder has been moved to a different drive (for example, D:), Steam Cloud will sync the folder in the correct drive, but the game will insist on saving and loading from the C: drive, meaning that Steam Cloud will still not work. Your Documents folder needs to be in the C: drive in order for Steam Cloud to work.

60 FPS and 120+ FPS
Main menu and cutscenes are capped at 30 FPS. Gameplay is capped at 59 FPS initially, frame limiter is unstable and jumps further up and down the longer the game is left on. (The latter is a long-standing issue with PlatinumGames PC ports)[6]
High dynamic range display (HDR)
See the glossary page for potential alternatives.

Widescreen resolution

Game is limited to 800x600, 1280x720, 1366x768, 1680x1050 and 1920x1080 only. Aspect ratios other than 16:9 are anamorphic.
Set custom resolution[7]
  1. Download MGROverride.
  2. Enter your desired resolution into the tool and press "Patch".
  3. Close the tool. You do not need to reopen it unless you wish to unpatch or change to another resolution.
  4. Select the 800x600 resolution in game to enable your custom resolution.

Notes

Can cause minor graphical glitches, especially with the HUD.
You must manually select the 800x600 resolution each time the game launches. This is because the game tries to autodetect the correct resolution for your monitor on launch.

Remove noise filter

Remove noise filter[8]
  1. Download the file from here or here.
  2. Extract to the installation folder and overwrite.

Modified camera settings

These mods disable some camera restrictions and leave the camera a little more calm and fixed. They also make the player character centered on the screen, rather than aligned to the left.
Use camera mods[9][10]
  1. Download the file from here or here.
  2. Extract the desired mod to <path-to-game>\GameData\.

Issues fixed

Crash on launch (Windows)

Even when the correct drive is present, the game might still crash from ntdll.dll as a faulty module
The game uses a fixed path for its data instead of using the standard Windows variables, if the C: drive is missing the game will not be able to save and will crash.
Restart Steam[citation needed]
Installing the game on the C: Drive[12]
  1. Add a new Steam library path on the C: drive. See Adding a new library path.
  2. Move the main installation folder to the new Steam Library path. See Moving a game from a different computer.

Notes

Alternatively simply reinstall the game on the correct drive.
Create a new C: drive[13][14]

Notes

If needed a USB stick can also be plugged in and set to the appropiate letter instead.
Overlays in Game[citation needed]

Notes

If you use Discord, Geforce Experience or After Burner overlay you gonna need it to turn it off in order to fix this crash issue.

Run the game at screen refresh rate

Fullscreen mode may default the display's refresh rate to 24 Hz or 60 Hz, especially for users using HDMI cables.[15]
Use ForceFix
  1. Install recommended software and system updates, if for Windows 7, under Ideal Conditions from Steam Guide.
  2. Download version of ForceFix for your operating system from Steam Guide.
  3. Unpack the archive and launch ForceFix.
  4. For refresh rates above 60 Hz, set frequency under Custom tab and Apply.

Notes

By default, the refresh rate in the game will go back to normal once you close the program. You can change it by unchecking Restore on Close option.
Set screen refresh rate[16]
  1. Install Special K by following the Special K Unofficial Guide.
  2. Start the game once and close it to allow the configuration file of Special K to be created.
  3. Open <path-to-game>\d3d9.ini or %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Mods\SpecialK\Profiles\METAL GEAR RISING REVENGEANCE.exe\SpecialK.ini depending on the installation method you used.
  4. Change RefreshRate=-1 to the proper value, e.g. RefreshRate=60 or use RefreshRate=0 for automatic detection.
  5. Change EnableTextureMods=true to EnableTextureMods=false.

  1. 1.0 1.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/235460/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (235460) may differ in some cases.
