Remapping
Only A, S, D, F, Z, X, C, and V can be remapped, while I, J, K, L and the Arrow keys are bound to movement, Space to pause, Esc functions as Select for X1-X4, and Tab opens the game menu which cannot be remapped. Keys can be remapped independently from each of the games' and X Challenge's options menu, however, key bindings are also tied to controller button mappings (e.g. A is the tied B button, Z is tied to the A button, F is tied to the Left Trigger). X1-X3 also cannot use F and V keys due to the SNES games only uses two shoulder buttons. [1]

DualShock 4 support

This method does not require a third-party program or Steam Input Wrapper to work.
Edit config.ini[3]
  1. Go to <path-to-game> and open config.ini with a text editor.
  2. Scroll down to the section labeled [JOYPAD], then replace the values with the following.
  3. DualShock 4 (Wireless Controller):
    [JOYPAD]
    ProductName=Wireless Controller
    A=1
    B=2
    X=0
    Y=3
    LEFT=POV
    RIGHT=POV
    UP=POV
    DOWN=POV
    START=9
    BACK=8
    LT=6
    LB=4
    RT=7
    RB=5
    LSTICK_PUSH=10
    LSTICK_VERT=Y
    LSTICK_HORZ=X
    RSTICK_PUSH=11
    RSTICK_VERT=RZ
    RSTICK_HORZ=Z
  4. Save the file (File → Save or Ctrl+S). The game should now recognize a DualShock 4 controller without a wrapper.

    Tested using a Logitech F310 in DirectInput mode which resulted in incorrect button placements (B is A in-game, LT is LB, etc.). Editing the file to have the buttons match with the corresponding button numbers appeared to fix the issue.
