Essential improvements

Manhunt Fixer

Fixes several issues on modern systems such as crashes, gate not opening, audio loops, AI issues and script issues by downloading and applying the latest version of these fixes automatically.
Includes optional enhancement mods, such as MHP and Manhunt.PluginMH.
Proton: included D3D8 wrapper causes many environmental textures to appear pitch-black. Currently advised to manually install fixes and skip ThirteenAG's custom D3D8 wrapper.[2]
Use automated Manhunt Fixer installer[3]
Proton: autolocating Steam version does not work and results in an error. Manually locate game install location instead.
Apply all default Manhunt Fixer's fixes manually[4]
  1. Apply Apply ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix manually.
  2. Apply Manhunt Fixer's exe-patch manually.
  3. Apply ThirteenAG's custom D3D8 wrapper manually. Only apply if needed. Should be skipped on Proton due to graphical issues.[5]
  4. Apply Manhunt Audio Fix manually.

Skip intro-videos

Disable intro video through installing Manhunt.PluginMH mod[6]
By default, the bSkipIntroSequence value in the PluginMH.ini file is set to true, skipping the intro video.
Manually replace intro video with an empty variant[7]
  1. Rename or delete <path-to-game>\levels\GLOBAL\MPEG\titles.bik.
  2. Download the empty video file and place it in <path-to-game>\levels\GLOBAL\MPEG\.
  3. Rename it to titles.bik.

Widescreen

When playing in widescreen resolutions, the game suffers from some minor issues with incorrect size and placement of the HUD. Additionally there is a minor incorrectness regarding the aspect size and FOV of the game when playing with widescreen resolutions.[9]
Apply ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix automatically by applying Manhunt Fixer[10]
Apply ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix manually[11]
  1. Download ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix.
  2. Extract all contents of the archive to <path-to-game>.

FOV

Adjust FOV through edit of ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix configuration file[9]
  1. Apply ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix.
  2. Open <path-to-game>/scripts/Manhunt.WidescreenFix.ini in a text editor.
  3. Adjust the FOVFactor multiplier (standard: 0.0) to the desired value to make FOV either bigger or smaller and save the file.

Input

The game does not officially support controllers.[12]

XInput-compatible controllers

XInput controllers have wrong mappings and are practically unusable
Use XInput Plus
  1. Download XInput Plus.
  2. Set the target program to manhunt.exe
  3. Go to "Sticks", and change the "Rect Correction" slider from "0" to "1".
  4. Go to "DirectInput" and check "Enable DirectInput Output."
  5. Assign "LT/RT" to "Button 11/12"
  6. Assign "Right Stick" to "Z Axis/Z Rot"
  7. Assign "DPAD" to "Button 13-16"
  8. Press apply, this will install a DLL file in <path-to-game> (which will be automatically used when you start the game).

Notes

If Camera Y axis is inverted, go to "Sticks" to "Right Stick" and tick "Invert Y" option
If something beeps when game launches, go to "Settings" to "Others" and untick "Enable Init Beep" option

Game not booting/crashing, gate at first level won't open and unable to pickup pickups

Rockstar producing the Steam-version, seemingly introduced some bugs like the gate not opening in the first level and being unable to pick up pickups.
The exe-patch makes the game run through testapp.exe (original retail executable without these issues) by renaming it to Manhunt.exe to fix these issues.[13] Additionally, it patches this renamed executable to fix a bug where the game won’t boot due to Data Execution Prevention (DEP) in Windows (integral part of anti virus protection and should never be disabled).[14]
Apply the exe-patch automatically by using Manhunt Fixer[15]
Apply the exe-patch manually[16]
  1. Download the exe-patch.
  2. Extract all contents of the archive to <path-to-game>.
  3. Run exepatch.exe to patch the executable.
  4. Optional: exepatch.exe and manhunt.exe.backup can be safely removed.

Glitched NPC's and 60+ FPS

On some machines, due to unknown causes, the games' frame rate limiter doesn't properly engage, which causes performance higher than 60 FPS. This can cause issues such as glitched AI where the AI just stands still or executes unexpected behavior. Make sure to only apply these fixes if suffering from this issue.
Cap the game to 60 FPS[17][18]
Preferred solution over using wrappers as it leaves the game's code untouched.

Use D3D8 wrapper

Proton: as Proton already uses its own D3D8 wrappers, none of the below solutions should be applied to avoid issues like black textures and lighting issues.
Apply ThirteenAG's custom D3D8 wrapper automatically by applying Manhunt Fixer[19]
Includes a custom D3D8 wrapper that translates API-calls of the game to D3D9, fixing the game's frame rate limiter.
Apply ThirteenAG's custom D3D8 wrapper manually[20]
Is a custom D3D8 wrapper that translates API-calls of the game to D3D9, fixing the game's frame rate limiter.
  1. Download ThirteenAG's D3D8 wrapper.
  2. Extract all contents of the archive to <path-to-game>.
Use an alternative D3D8 to D3D9 wrapper: d3d8to9[21]
Different, but functionally the same, as the wrapper used in Manhunt Fixer.
  1. Download the latest version of d3d8to9 (the d3d8.dll file.)
  2. Place the file in <path-to-game>.

Certain sound effects and music loop

Asynchronous file reading behavior has changed since Windows XP, which Manhunt depended on, causing a bug in this game where sound effects and music can loop. Manhunt Audio Fix fixes this issue this by simulating the old Windows XP asynchronous file reading behavior while keeping the audio intact.[22]
Apply Manhunt Audio fix automatically through Manhunt Fixer
Apply Manhunt Audio Fix manually[23]
  1. Download and extract Ultimate ASI Loader.
  2. Extract dinput8.dll from the downloaded archive to <path-to-game>.
  3. Download and extract Manhunt Audio Fix to <path-to-game>.

Mods

MHP and Manhunt.PluginMH mods are fully compatible with each other.

Manhunt.PluginMH

Also included Manhunt Fixer.
Only main enhancement enabled by default is skipping the intro sequence. Also adds optional developer menu, togglable HUD, custom menu with cheats, console and screenshot mode. Setting certain values to true in PluginMH.ini allows users to enable several other enhancements, like first-person mode.[24]
Install Manhunt.PluginMH mod[25]
  1. Download ThirteenAG's Ultimate ASI loader. This is needed to load the mod.
  2. Extract the contents of the downloaded archive to a location of choice. Rename the extracted dinput8.dll file to ddraw.dll to avoid it overwriting other fixes.
  3. Move renamed file to <path-to-game>.
  4. Download Manhunt.PluginMH and extract the archive to {{folder<path-to-game>}}.

MHP

Also included in Manhunt Fixer.
Re-implements many missing PlayStation 2 specific effects missing in the PC version. Many of these enhancements are enabled by default and can be toggled on and off through MHP.ini.
Also implements MSAA support through changing the nMSAA in MHP.ini to a value from 0 to a maximum 16 (0 by default). On Nvidia-hardware only it is advised to then also set bRwMSAASupport to 1 to work around driver-related issues, black screen and graphical corruption.
Install MHP mod[26]
  1. Download ThirteenAG's Ultimate ASI loader and extract it to location of choice. This is needed to load the mod.
  2. Rename the extracted file to ddraw.dll to avoid it overwriting other fixes.
  3. Move the renamed file to <path-to-game>.
  4. Download MHP and extract its contents to <path-to-game>.
