Warnings

The macOS (OS X) version of this game does not work on macOS Catalina (version 10.15) or later due to the removal of support for 32-bit-only apps.

Key points

Previously known as Mafia II, but was renamed on Steam to Mafia II (Classic) on May 19, 2020 to avoid confusion with the remaster.
Some licensed music tracks have been removed in 2016 Steam re-release and later digital releases. See Restore original music.

Field of view (FOV)

Change FOV with Gibbed Tools[4]
  1. Download Illusion Engine Gibbed Tools and extract it somewhere.
  2. Run Gibbed.Illusion.ExploreSDS.exe and click Open SDS.
  3. Go to <path-to-game>\pc\sds\tables\
  4. Open tables.sds.
  5. Click the + beside XML, scroll down to /config/gameCamera/playerCamera and double-click on it.
  6. It contains various camera views (<Stay>, <Sprint>, <Climb>, etc.), each having their own <Fov value="XX" /> parameter listed under their name.
  7. Change the values of those parameters (most are set at 65 or 75) to your desired FOV for that camera. Don't miss the ones under the <Interier> section also.
  8. Click Save, and switch back to the archive via the Windows menu at the top.
  9. The FOV for the various driving views can be changed in the carCameraBumper, carCameraGamepad (chase cam), carCameraHood, and carCameraWheel files, by editing the same <Fov value="XX" /> parameters. Other cameras (cover system, melee, etc.) have their own file as well.
  10. When all files are saved, switch back to the archive and click Save Archive.
  11. Double-click tables.sds and replace it (or make a backup first before replacing).

Issues fixed

"PhysX SDK not initialized. PhysX System Software will be installed"

Install PhysX[citation needed]
  1. Uninstall Current Nvidia PhysX Installation.
  2. Run Mafia II through Steam and let it install old PhysX distributable that comes with download.
  3. Game should be playable or at least the above mentioned error shouldn't cause it to crash at startup.

Notes

You can install the latest PhysX SDK after following the above steps and still be able to play Mafia II

Screen flickering ATI/AMD

Users with ATI/AMD cards may experience screen flickering while playing the game. Fixing this could highlight screen-tearing.
DLL addition[citation needed]
  1. Download Mafia II ATI Fix.rar from the first link here.
  2. Extract using 7-Zip or similar.
  3. Place atiumdag.dll in <path-to-game>\pc
  4. The screen flickering is now gone, turn on V-sync if necessary

Infinite loading screen in chapter 14

You may encounter an infinite loading screen in chapter 14 after the cutscene where you pay back Bruno if you raised money by holding up stores.
Restart chapter[7]

Some players have been able to start the following chapter from the main menu but otherwise you must restart chapter 14 from the main menu and raise money by dropping off cars to Bruski.

Game stuck in slow motion while being pursued by the police

Playing at over ⁓100 FPS results in a bug where the game is permanently put in slow motion when police become hostile.
Cap the frame rate at 100 FPS[citation needed]
Enable vsync in the options game and set monitor to 60hz[citation needed]

Restore original music

Some licensed music tracks have been removed in June 2016 Steam re-release and later digital releases.
Steam copies activated before June 2016 are unaffected. All GOG copies are affected.
Restore original music[8]
  1. Download the Mafia-II-Restored-Music-for-New-Owners.zip archive.
  2. Extract the Mafia II\pc directory to the installation directory, overwriting existing 0-byte files.

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/50130/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (50130) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
