WinG was an API developed by Chris Hecker at Microsoft and released September 21, 1994 which intended to help game developers more easily port DOS games to Windows and provide faster graphics performance by working around display driver limitations. It was discontinued in favor of DirectX, and out-of-the-box support for it was dropped in Windows 98 SE.
