Key points

Modern systems need workarounds for some compatibility problems; see Installing on modern versions of Windows.
Keyboard control is extremely twitchy due to the game being programmed for low framerates. Using an Xbox 360 control pad or other game controller for movement is recommended.

Issues fixed

Installing on modern versions of Windows

Use alternate installer[citation needed]
The full install also counts as a no-CD patch.
Install with workarounds[citation needed]
  1. Install by exploring the CD and running INSTALL.exe (the Autorun menu will crash if you try to use it).
  2. Go to \redist\directx on the disc and copy d3drm.dll into the installation folder.
  3. Run CONFIG.exe in the installation folder.
  4. Click Advanced.
  5. Ensure Ramp Emulation is selected. Alternatively, use Direct3D HAL for better transparency and filtered textures in combination with dgVoodoo 2.
  6. Run the game from the .exe
The game will crash if you exit via ESC but is otherwise playable.

Progress Doesn't Save

Close the game with Alt+F4[citation needed]
  1. Trying to close the game via Esc causes a crash and does not allow the game to save your progress. Instead, close the game using Alt+F4. You should see your progress the next time you play.

Run without a CD

Change the cdpath registry value[citation needed]
  1. Copy the full contents of the disk to a folder on your computer
  2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Mindscape\LEGO Island
  3. The cdpath value should have been set to the cd drive letter by the installer
  4. Set the cdpath value to the folder where you copied the CD files

Notes

You can also change the savepath value to change the save game data location
