Issues fixed

Running the game on 64-bit Windows

Although the game installer is 16-bit, the actual game is 32-bit. The only way to play it is to use an alternate installer or WineVDM:

Installing the game via alternate installer

Setting up the game with an alternate installer[citation needed]
  1. Somewhere on the computer (ex. the Desktop), create a new folder called "SETUP".
  2. Copy the contents of the Lego Chess CD and paste them into the folder that was created before.
  3. When everything has finished copying, go to <Setup Folder> and delete the SETUP.EXE file.
  4. Download the generic 32-bit installer and add it to the folder.
  5. Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
  6. Once the installer has finished, download the missing text file and add it to <path-to-game>.
  7. Run the Lego Chess.exe file to play the game.

Game crashes on startup or during gameplay

Crashes on startup[citation needed]
Crashes during gameplay
  1. Use "Run" from the Windows start menu and assign the game's source folder as an A Drive.
    Example subst A: "DriveLetter:\FolderofYourChoice\Lego Media\"
  2. To remove the drive later, use this command in Run: subst A: /D or reboot the computer.
  3. Ensure the game is running in Windows 95 compatibility Mode.

3D Rendering Options

Change the graphics driver settings

The "Krisalis Software Driver" is the default, this driver has a lower color depth and a "wobbly" 3D, sort of look like the original PlayStation.

The "D3D" driver while blurring some textures has higher color depth and closer to the Nintendo 64. To set up "D3D" follow the instructions here.

https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/DgVoodoo_2#DirectX_2-8 In later Windows versions (and under Wine in Linux/Mac OS) the game might not properly detect Direct3D support without using some workarounds.

  1. Set the game shortcut (or .exe file) to run in Windows 98 or 95 compatibility mode. If using Wine, change the Windows version in winecfg instead.
  2. Also set the "Chess Configuration" shortcut to run in Windows 98 or 95 compatibility mode.
  3. Next, run the "Chess Configuration" item in the start menu (or launch the game with the /video command-line argument).
  4. In the dialogue that appears, set the graphics driver to D3D 4MB+, which should now be a selectable option.

If still encountering issues in Windows 8 or 10, consider trying WineD3D.

Notes

  1. SafeDisc retail DRM does not work on Windows 10[1] or Windows 11 and is disabled by default on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 when the KB3086255 update is installed.[2]
  2. 2.0 2.1 When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
