The multiplayer functions can be accessed through command line parameters:

Host a game
-host -playername "HostName"
Where HostName is a name to identify the player

Join a game
-client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -playername "ClientName"
Where ClientName is a name to identify the player and xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of the host.

LAN play

Enable multiplayer for Steam version[3]
Full instructions and more info here
  1. Download the github repository here
  2. Extract file and navigate to Packages folder.
  3. Run IG2Patcher.exe from the latest version (currently 1.0.2.0).
  4. Select ig2_AddOn.exe in <path-to-game> using the ... button.
  5. Select any button in the main menu you want to redirect to the Multiplayer menu. Do not redirect the "Exit" or "Options" button, but a less used one like "Highscores" or "Credits"
  6. Click on the Patch button

Notes

Requires game version 2.2.0.0, 2.3.2.0, or 2.3.3.0.
GOG owners do not need this fix.
LAN only.
This fix reconfigures the native menu for LAN games, preventing it from functioning for internet games. For this reason, the Online Play fix is preferred.

Issues fixed

Corrupted text

Disable Steam overlay[citation needed]

Frame drops when zooming

Reduce frame drops when zooming[citation needed]
  1. When first loading the map zoom out as far as possible.
  2. Wait for the frame rate to recover.

Notes

Once the frame rate recovers, there will be fewer frame drops when changing between zoom levels.

  2. 2.0 2.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/271360/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (271360) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
