Problem: Game refuses to start. You get an old school looking box that says "Unhandled exception: c0000005" and "Location: <varies>".

Solution: Turn off Data Execution Prevention for GTAIII.

Here's how (for Vista at least):
  • Open "System" by clicking the "Start" button, clicking "Control Panel", clicking "System and Maintenance", and then clicking "System".
  • Click "Advanced". In the Performance box, click "Settings".
  • Click the "Data Execution Prevention" tab, and then click "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select".
  • Click "Add". Browse to where GTA3.exe is, and double click it.

Good to go!

Problem: Cars in game look black and stupid.

Solution: Replace the particle.txd file, which is available from the "mirror" download at this forum post. Follow the instructions there - basically just overwrite your own particle.txd file.
