God of War is a singleplayer, third-person, ARPG, adventure, action game, featuring action oriented hack and slash gameplay and a strong narrative, made by Santa Monica Studio and published by PlayStation. God of War is a sequel/reboot in the God of War series, and uses a proprietary engine.

God of War was first released on PlayStation 4 on April 20, 2018, and was later released on PC on January 14, 2022. The PC version has several features over the PlayStation 4 version, featuring high frame rate, ultrawide, and high-resolution-support, although with a few issues such as no anti-aliasing-toggle or FoV slider. The launch was considered a success, with the player-count reaching a peak that surpassed other ports that have been released.[2]

Use Cheat Engine[5]
  1. Download Cheat Engine and the cheat table.
  2. Import the God of War cheat table into Cheat Engine.
  3. Launch the game.
  4. At the bottom of the program, enable the checkbox and the FOV checkbox afterwards.
Cheat Engine may be detected as a cheat tool in games with anti-cheat, it is recommended to make sure Cheat Engine is fully closed before launching another game.
Use Flawless Widescreen[citation needed]
  1. Download and install Flawless Widescreen.
  2. Search for "God of War" in the plugin list.
  3. Install the plugin, and adjust the FOV values to your liking.

Disable DLSS Sharpening

Modify GoW.exe
  1. Open <path-to-game>\GoW.exe in a hex editor (e.g. HxD).
  2. Search for 41 B8 6B 00 00 00 48 8D 15 as hex.
  3. Replace it with 41 B8 4B 00 00 00 48 8D 15.
  4. Save the changes.
While patch 1.0.4 did add a DLSS sharpening slider, setting it to 0 still leaves haloing and shimmering.

Anti-aliasing (AA)

Use a patcher to disable TAA
  1. Download this patcher.
  2. Run the patcher. Manually select the game's executable if the patcher does not detect it.
This also disables the Sharpening filter that's used alongside TAA.
May cause the ambient occlusion to be darker than usual on the Original setting. Setting the game's ambient occlusion to High or Ultra fixes this issue.
Antivirus software(s) may flag the patcher as malware. The patcher is safe and virus-free.

Depth Of Field

Use a patcher to disable Depth Of Field
  1. Download this patcher.
  2. Run the patcher. Manually select the game's executable if the patcher does not detect it.
Disables both cutscene and gameplay Depth Of Field.
Antivirus software(s) may flag the patcher as malware. The patcher is safe and virus-free.

Vignette

The game uses a mild Vignette effect.
Use a patcher to disable Vignette
  1. Download this patcher.
  2. Run the patcher. Manually select the game's executable if the patcher does not detect it.
Disabling Vignette also disables the low health warning due to it being realized with a red-tinted flashing vignette.
Antivirus software(s) may flag the patcher as malware. The patcher is safe and virus-free.

Issues unresolved

Poor performance

AMD GPUs may show FPS drops in many locations, regardless of graphics settings and GPU usage percentage.[Note 4][8]

Controller issues

Unintended inputs if using DS4/DualSense natively and the game is running at high FPS

The game engine seems to expect a new controller "Input Report" at every in-game frame. If the Input Report is not received in time the engine interprets as if the user released all buttons/sticks/triggers until a new one has been received. This means that if the controller is not "communicating" faster than the time delta between frames, the player may see buttons being "released" on their own then pressing themselves again, sporadically or frequently.

Steam discussion page related to this issue
If using the controller via cable the user may not run into this issue under normal conditions
Impossible to fully prevent it
Issue can happen frequently if using the controller wirelessly, either via Sony's Official USB Wireless adapter for DS4 controllers or via remapping the wireless DS4/DualSense into a virtual wired DS4
Use the controller via Steam Input or via a XInput wrapper[citation needed]
  • This issue is not present if using XInput compatible controllers
  • Steam Input will present DS4/DualSense controllers as if they were a X360 gamepad to the game
Use the controller via cable[citation needed]
  • DS4/DualSense controllers communicates fast enough via USB for the issue to not occur under normal conditions, though it still can happen sporadically
  • The issue can happen frequently via cable if using low quality cables, bad USB ports, the USB hub being under load etc
Run the game at 60 FPS or lower if using the controller wirelessly[citation needed]
  • This does not fix the issue, just makes it harder for it to occur in the usual wireless conditions as the lower the FPS the harder it is for the issue to occur
  • Issue can still happen frequently depending on the stability of the BT connection

Notes

  1. When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
  2. 2.0 2.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/1593500/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (1593500) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
  3. Doesn't seem to work currently
  4. This is observed on Vega 56/64, Radeon 570, 580, 590, 5700XT, 6600XT, 6800XT, 6900XT. Several reports on Steam community forum indicate that both Intel and Ryzen CPU users may be currently affected. On January 26th, Sony Santa Monica has announced "working with external partners to find a resolution."
