{{Introduction

Key points
|introduction      = Fallout: New Vegas is a singleplayer first-person open world RPG shooter. The game is not a direct sequel to its predecessor Fallout 3, but follows events from Fallout and Fallout 2. The game was developed by Obsidian Entertainment and some members of the development team had previously worked on Fallout and Fallout 2 whilst working at Black Isle Studios. The game shares much of its engine and assets as Fallout 3 and is also published by Bethesda Softworks.
+
Extensive modding community.
|release history  = The game was released on retail (Steam key) and on Steam on October 19, 2010. The game was later released DRM-free on GOG.com on June 2, 2017, and later released on Bethesda.net on January 16, 2020. The Bethesda.net version has recompiled exes which makes them incompatible with nearly all mods.

The game's PC launch was considered "buggy as hell" by many critics and players. However various official patches released until July 7, 2011, alleviated many of these bugs and performance issues.

Fallout: New Vegas is primarily monetized by four DLCs which could be considered large story expansion packs, in addition to some microtransactions which contain time-limited pre-order unlocks like weapons and ammo. From February 2012, the game was released as the Ultimate Edition which bundled all DLC and microtransactions and is normally only available to purchase as a bundle on PC as of 2012.

|current state    = Modding is well supported using the officialy provided toolkit Garden of Eden Creation Kit on Steam (in the Steam Library under Tools section), and players have produced mods which fix many of the issues with the game post-official support. The largest collection of mods are available from Nexus Mods and there is an extensive modding forum, and the game does not have Steam Workshop support.

As of 2020, the game has stable performance on PC.cn However it is recommended that players add some mods, in particular, YUP, FNV 4GB Patcher, NVSE, see Essential improvements for more information.

Patches

FNV BSA Decompressor

Decompresses the Fallout: New Vegas BSAs and repacks them without zlib compression for performance.
Transcodes the .ogg sounds effects to .wav so they work.
Extracts any .mp3 files to loose files because they will not play when in a BSA.
Updates Vorbis libraries, fixing an audio memory leak, sound related stuttering and boosts performance while reducing CPU strain.

FNV 4GB Patcher

Patch to make Fallout: New Vegas Large Address Aware and automatically load New Vegas Script Extender.
The GOG version is already Large Address Aware, but does not load NVSE from the original exectuable.
Improves stability on systems with at least 3GB RAM.

Heap Replacement

New Vegas Heap Replacer

Replaces in-game heap with a faster, more optimized version.
Decreases load times, removes some stutter and slightly improves frame rate.

Edit Field of view (FOV)[2]
  1. Edit %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\FalloutNV\Fallout.ini
  2. Change fDefaultFOV=75.0000 to the desired FOV.
  3. Below it, add fDefaultWorldFOV=75.0000 set to the desired value. Example:
fDefaultFOV=80.0000
fDefaultWorldFOV=80.0000

Notes

High FOV values can cause scopes to not cover the entire screen when aiming down sights.[3]
If you use the console command fov #, achievements will be disabled for the current session of the game; edit the file mentioned above for a permanent fix.
Suggested FOV values (with the assumption of default being good for 5:4):
Aspect Ratio FOV Value
4:3 79.9000
16:9 105.3000
15:9 99.0000
16:10 95.2000
21:9 80.0000

Windowed

By default, windowed mode only supports a limited number of resolutions.
Edit windowed resolution[citation needed]
  1. Go to %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\FalloutNV\
  2. Open FalloutPrefs.ini.
  3. Change the values of iSize W= and iSize H= to the desired resolution.

Vertical sync (Vsync)

Vsync is enabled at all times, even if the Vertical Sync box is unticked. This setting can be forced in the Fallout_default.ini file.
Force Disable VSync[citation needed]
  1. Go to the installation folder.
  2. Open Fallout_default.ini
  3. Change iPresentInterval=1 to iPresentInterval=0

Enabling SSAO for all graphics cards

ENB Series has a much better AO shader that works on all GPUs. Download it from this location: http://enbdev.com/download_mod_falloutnv.htm
To install, extract all the files in the archive to the same folder as FalloutNV.exe; d3d9.dll, enblocal.ini, enbseries.ini, and other files, will be in the same folder as FalloutNV.exe

Enabling HBAO+ for Nvidia graphics cards

Note: Using Nvidia HBAO+ can break compatibility with ENB Series.
Use the Ambient Occlusion flag 0x00000005 with Quality or High Quality.
Using Ambient Occlusion flag 0x00000005[4]
  1. Download and run Nvidia Profile Inspector.
  2. Under Profiles select Fallout - New Vegas.
  3. Under Ambient Occlusion compatibility insert the flag 0x00000005.
  4. Under Ambient Occlusion usage select Enabled.
  5. Under Ambient Occlusion setting select your quality of preference, but in order to use HBAO+ you must use Quality or High Quality.
  6. Click Apply changes.
If you get an error saying access denied when applying the Ambient Occlusion setting, navigate to:
"C:\ProgramData\NVIDIA Corporation"
and delete the folder named "Drs". If there is no Drs folder then create it, this will fix the error.

Mouse acceleration

Disable mouse acceleration[6]
  1. Go to the documents folder.
  2. Go to the My Games folder and then to the falloutnv folder
  3. Open Fallout.ini
  4. Find the section: [Controls]
  5. Add these lines:
fForegroundMouseAccelBase=0
fForegroundMouseAccelTop=0
fForegroundMouseBase=0
fForegroundMouseMult=0

This fix should work, opposed to changes to the fallout_default.ini in the game's folder. Also, there is no need to add these lines every time you start up Fallout. Once added, the mouse acceleration should be disabled permanently. The following paragraphs should be obsolete but are kept for archive purposes.

If this fix doesn't work, load the Fallout: New Vegas launcher and then add the lines to Fallout.ini. However, you will have to add those lines every time you play Fallout. You can also make Fallout.ini read only, which will prevent mouse acceleration from being reset.

If this still doesn't work, find the following lines in the Fallout_default.ini and change them to match the following:

bBackground Mouse=1
iPresentInterval=0

Issues fixed

TweakGuides has created a comprehensive guide for fixing issues in this game. It can be found here.

Characters "Throwing Up"

This is caused by conflicting character mods, this can usually be fixed with a compatibility patch or by using LOOT to fix the load order.

Rotating Heads/Floating, non-animated NPCs

Setting "Actor Fade" to the maximum value should fix this.

Random unlit geometry when using Pip-Boy light

The "Pip-Boy Light Priority Fix" xNVSE plugin may help remedy this, without needing to sacrifice distant light quality.

Alternatively lowering the "Light Fade" option can help reduce instances of this happening, at the cost of distant lighting being reduced.[9]

Game Crashes Randomly

Random Crashes[citation needed]
  1. Use New Vegas Tick Fix
  2. Use NVAC
  3. Use the FNV 4GB Patcher
  4. Use the JIP LN NVSE Plugin
  5. If using New Vegas Stutter Remover remove it

Game Stuck On Loading Screen

Perpetual loading screen.
Sometimes attempting to 'load' a save game does not work.
Generate New Autosave[citation needed]
  1. Start a new game and playing it to the point where Doc Mitchell tells you to go to the Vigor Tester machine.
  2. At this point the game will autosave, and loading your previous save should work now.
Load a different save first[citation needed]
  1. Load an older save (or different save).
  2. At this point the engine and game are fully loaded, loading your previous save should work now. This is faster than having to skip cutscenes and wait for an autosave, but requires having other saves on your hard drive.

Unable To Level

Caused by using the advlevel console command.
rewardxp console command[10]
Can be fixed by adding enough XP to level once again.
  1. Use the console command rewardxp (e.g. rewardxp 5000 to award 5000xp) and add enough XP to level once again.

Some Sounds Don't Work

Voice acting and Pip-Boy sounds (and possibly others) can not be heard, while the radio and movement can.
Windows Sound Options[citation needed]
Can be fixed by correcting the number of sound channels in the configuration of your playback device in Windows.

Application load error P:0000065434

This happens when you start the launcher.
Launcher doesn't open[citation needed]
  1. Open Steam as Admin.
  2. Rightclick the game in your Steam library and select "Properties".
  3. Select the tab "Local content" and click "Verify integrity of game cache". This might be necessary several times. Steam will download the missing/corrupt files.
Launcher can't find Steam[citation needed]
  1. Open CMD in Admin-mode
  2. Go to the New Vegas installation folder (the same folder where NVSE resides)
  3. Create a symbolic link to Steam by typing this command in CMD: mklink "Steam.exe" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe"

Game Crashes on Startup (NVSE installed properly)

This happens when you start the game, and have mods that utilize NVSE (New Vegas Script Extender)
Crashes on Startup (NVSE installed properly)[citation needed]
  1. Rightclick nvse_loader in the Fallout New Vegas installation folder and select properties.
  2. Select the tab "Compatibility" and click "Run this program as administrator" and apply.
This could also be the result of mods attempting to change the same object.

Player "Sliding"

Character will continue to move or "slide" a bit sometimes even after they have stopped moving. Note that this should not be confused for the game engine forcing characters to take a full step when moving.
Player "Sliding"[citation needed]
  1. Open the Windows Control Panel.
  2. Go to Keyboard settings (NOTE: You may have to change your view from "Category" to "Icons" in order to access Keyboard settings)
  3. Under the "Speed" tab, set Repeat Delay to Short, and set Repeat Rate to Slow.
This fix does not work for some players.
Limiting Maximum pre-rendered frames[citation needed]
  1. Download and run Nvidia Profile Inspector.
  2. Under Profiles select Fallout - New Vegas.
  3. In section Sync and Refresh set the option Maximum pre-rendered frames to 1.
  4. Click Apply changes.

Data Files get auto loaded on Startup

Affected data files are enabled at all times, even if their boxes in the "Data Files" menu are unticked.
Disable data file autoloading[citation needed]
  1. Go to the <path-to-game>\Data\
  2. Search for a file you want disabled with a .nam extension.
  3. Delete or rename the selected file.
  4. Repeat for any file you want disabled.
If you chose to delete the .nam files, you can recover them by verifying the game data files integrity in Steam.

Application load error 5:0000065434

Occurs when launching the game in any other way than through Steam due to an inappropriate Steam AppID being used.
Can happen when you have a Polish, Czech or Russian version of the game.
Error code P:0000065432 may also apply when the AppID is incorrect.
Installation of Fallout NV Extenders[citation needed]
  1. Download New Vegas Script Extender.
  2. Install the New Vegas Script Extender according to the ReadMe file found in the archive you just downloaded.
  3. Install 4GB Fallout New Vegas.
  4. Create a shortcut to fnv4gb.exe in your Fallout NV folder and add -SteamAppId 22490 as a launch parameter. The shortcut should now resemble:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout New Vegas enplczru\fnv4gb.exe" -SteamAppId 22490
  5. Use this shortcut command line as an example. It can be used to launch the game through Nexus Mod Manager, Mod Organizer and possibly other launchers.

Notes

This method only applies to PL/CZ/RU versions of the game. If it fails, try one of the methods below.
This method involves installing two extensions. While being mods, they are considered essential.
Match shortcut target AppID with actual Steam AppID[citation needed]
  1. Download New Vegas Script Extender.
  2. Install the New Vegas Script Extender according to the ReadMe file found in the archive you just downloaded.
  3. Install 4GB Fallout New Vegas.
  4. Find the correct Steam AppID for your version of the game. The easiest way to do this is as follows:
    1. Right click the game within Steam, then select "Create Desktop Shortcut."
    2. Right click the newly created shortcut on your desktop and select properties.
    3. The URL address should be in the form of steam://rungameid/22380, with the last number being the real Steam AppID.
  5. Create a shortcut to fnv4gb.exe in your Fallout NV folder and add -SteamAppId xxxxx as a launch parameter. Replace "xxxxx" with your real AppID. Shortcut should now resemble:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout New Vegas\fnv4gb.exe" -SteamAppId 22490
  6. Use this shortcut command line as an example. It can be used to launch the game through Nexus Mod Manager, Mod Organizer and possibly other launchers.

Notes

This method applies whenever the AppID being launched does not match your Steam installation, such as any localized version of the game or a special edition of the game.
As above, this method involves installing two extensions. While being mods, they are considered essential.
Symbolic link creation[11]
  1. Open a Command prompt using "Run as Administrator" (Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command prompt).
  2. At the prompt type, enter the complete path to the common folder inside the SteamApps folder you use. For example,
    CD "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\"
and press Enter (if the common folder does not exist, create it).
  3. The command prompt should show the above path. If not, try the following steps. Otherwise, skip to Step 4.
    1. First, check to see if the path you entered exists.
    2. Second, if the path exists, check to see if the drive letter of the path is different than C. If so, in addition to navigating to the folder, you must also enter the drive letter and press Enter in order to see the path you entered. For example,
      D:
  4. Next, type
mklink /d "Fallout New Vegas" "D:\Steam\SteamApps\common\Fallout New Vegas"
and press Enter (change the example path to your Fallout New Vegas installation folder).
  5. Recreate any shortcuts using the new "proper" path (i.e. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Fallout New Vegas\FalloutNVLauncher.exe).
  6. Reconfigure your mod managers to also include the changed path.

Notes

This method creates a symbolic link between where the game is installed, and where it "thinks" it is installed. It allows using the correct path without moving the game files.
Game reinstallation[citation needed]
  1. Uninstall the game.
  2. Install the game, this time in the default Steam folder. This is frequently:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\

Notes

This method moves all the game files to the default Steam folder. Make sure you have enough disk space before doing this.

Tilde console key not working

Pressing the tilde key on the keyboard does not launch the cheat console.
Disconnect gamepad[citation needed]

Can be fixed by disconnecting the controller. The controller can be reconnected after using the cheat console.

Error Code 53

Delete Relevant Appmanifest files[citation needed]

Delete Appmanifest files from the Game Library and restart Steam. Re-install the game and Steam will find the existing files.

Unable to trade/loot in the German game Version

Use the .exe from the international version[12]

Exchange the game's .exe-files with ones from the international version, available HERE.

Notes

This method also reenables the gib/gore features of the game.

Stutter when limiting FPS through ENB Series, NVSR, or driver

Use D3D Antilag by Kegetys (no ENB)[citation needed]

Download Kegetys D3D9 Antilag HERE

If not using an ENB, extract d3d9.dll and antilag.cfg to the same folder as FalloutNV.exe. To adjust the FPS limit, edit antilag.cfg with a text editor and change the value for the Antilag setting. E.G: FPSlimit=40

Use D3D Antilag by Kegetys (with ENB)[citation needed]

If using an ENB, rename the kegetys d3d9.dll to d3d9_antilag.dll, put d3d9_antilag.dll in the same folder as FalloutNV.exe, open enblocal.ini, and change the first three settings to:

EnableProxyLibrary=true

InitProxyFunctions=true

ProxyLibrary=d3d9_antilag.dll
