Doom Eternal is a first-person shooter sci-fi game made by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game is a sequel to Doom (2016) which continues the time line of the classic Doom series, and uses the newer Id Tech 7 engine.

The game was released on Steam and Bethesda.net on March 20, 2020. On the release day it was discovered that Bethesda.net copies of the game shipped with a DRM-free version of the game executable, which was subsequently removed the same day by id Software.[1]

On May 14, 2020 the game received its first update, titled Update 1, which added empowered demons, echelon levelling, various quality of life changes, balance changes, and fixes for various issues.[2] The update also introduced the Denuvo Anti-Cheat protection to scan and report cheaters within the battlemode multiplayer game mode. Upon its release the anti-cheat protection drew criticism because of its use of a kernel mode driver and caused issues with the Proton compatibility layer for Linux players, which had previously been awarded a 'Platinum' rating on ProtonDB prior to the patch.[3] A few days later on May 20, 2020 id Software announced that they were preparing and testing an update, titled Update 1.1, that would remove the anti-cheat protection and that the development team would re-evaluate their approach to anti-cheat integration. Update 1.1 was also set to include fixes to some performance and stability issues introduced in Update 1.[4]

Doom Eternal's creative director announced that the game would not contain microtransactions on January 27, 2020.[5] However on March 10 2020, details of new cosmetics were released as content tied with Twitch Prime subscriptions.[6]

Many skins can be earned in-game through XP unlocks. Some skins will be released as content tied with a Twitch Prime subscription until July 2020.[7]

Mod tools have been discussed by the developer but have not been officially announced.[8] A small modding community exists on Nexus Mods. Doom and Doom II are playable within Doom Eternal, but the WAD files are also included in the game files, and can be played externally using Doom source ports.

Steam Input

Steam Input allows to play Doom Eternal with Dualshock 4, Switch Pro Controller and Steam Controller.

Provides additional remapping and ability to utilize unused features like gyroscope.
Right Trigger clicks on elements highlighted by cursor, instead of acting as expected. The gameplay and the map are not affected.
If Steam Controller is turned off during gameplay, and then turned on back, it refuses to send gamepad inputs. It can be bypassed by restarting the game or making a keyboard-only configuration. Dualshock 4 is not affected.
When gamepad is active, weapon wheel accepts gamepad input only. Configurations with simultaneous input (e.g. right trackpad of Steam Controller acts like a mouse) require mode shifting.

(Laptops only!) Make sure to have the laptop configured to use dedicated graphics for applications, instead of integrated ones (as last resort action - disable integrated GPU in device manager)[18]

Game crashes on launch when using AMD Ryzen CPU or Nvidia GPU

Update Chipset driver for CPU[19]
Update BIOS[19]

Game crashes before loading to menu

Update GPU drivers[19]
If using two AMD GPUs, plug both monitors into the primary GPU[19]
Disable Reshade's Global Vulkan Hook (assuming it was ever installed)[20]
Disable Steam Overlay[21]

Game crashes upon playing when using AMD Ryzen CPU or Nvidia RTX GPU

Lower graphics details to High, until AMD releases a fix.[19]

Game loads to a black screen when launching in full-screen mode

Update GPU drivers[19]
Add DOOMEternalx64vk.exe to exceptions in your antivirus software (including Windows Defender!).[19][22]
Disable one of GPUs if running SLI configuration[23]

Disable Steam Overlay[21]

Various mid-level crashes

Verify game's files.[14]

Some areas of the screen are obscured by large numbers of black particles

Disable Depth of Field[19]

Various performance issues

Update GPU drivers[19]
Use V-sync option other than adaptive and if that doesn't help - disable Vsync entirely.[14]
Disable Steam Overlay (other overlays as well) and the Steam in-game FPS-counter[19][14][25]
The performance issues caused by the Steam Overlay and Steam in-game FPS-counter were fixed in the Steam Client update from the 29th of April 2020.[26]

Decensor Doom and Doom II

Doom Eternal includes censored WADs of Doom (PSN edition) and Doom II (Bethesda.net edition), similar to the Doom 3: BFG Edition versions.[citation needed]
Add the original wad files manually.[citation needed]
  1. Go to <path-to-game>\base\classicwads\.
  2. Copy the original DOOM.WAD and DOOM2.WAD files into the folder and overwrite when prompted.

Unlock classic pistol

Use console command[27]
  1. Start the game, and minimize it.
  2. Open the Doom Eternal cheat table in Cheat Engine.
  3. Enable Unrestrict Console Commands/Cvars & Bind.
  4. Open the game's console via ~, and type g_enablePistol 1.

Unable to find any Battlemode matches. Please try again later.

Add exception for DOOMEternalx64vk.exe in your antivirus program or disable all the shields before launching the game.

Skip launcher GPU warnings

Edit launcher config[28]
Disabling these warnings isn't recommended as these warnings are there for a reason. It is generally adviced to first follow the advice in the warnings! Ignoring these warnings can lead to in-game bugs, the game not starting etc.
  1. Open <path-to-game>\launcherData\launcher.cfg in text editor.
  2. Switch rgl_showAMDStartupWarning parameter to 0.
  3. Switch rgl_showIntelStartupWarning parameter to 0.
  4. Switch rgl_showNvidiaStartupWarning parameter to 0.
  5. Save the file.

System requirements

Windows
Minimum Recommended
Operating system (OS) 7, 10
Processor (CPU) Intel Core i5 3.3 GHz
AMD Ryzen 3 3.1 GHz
System memory (RAM) 8 GB
Hard disk drive (HDD) 50 GB
Video card (GPU) Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti/GTX 1060/GTX 1650
AMD Radeon R9 280/R9 290/RX 470
4 GB of VRAM
A 64-bit operating system is required.
The minimum requirements are for 1080p at 60 FPS with Low quality settings. The recommended requirements are for 1080p at 60 FPS with High quality settings.
The game requires a CPU with SSE4.2 instruction-support.[29] here is a workaround for CPU's that don't support SSE4.2. Please know that it is very likely that on these old CPU's the performance will be bad.
