Death end re;Quest 2 is a singleplayer third-person JRPG game developed by Idea Factory in conjunction with Compile Heart and published by Idea Factory International. The game is a sequel to Death end re;Quest and it uses OROCHI 4 as its engine.

Prior to the game release, it has been announced that the character designs have been slightly adjusted "to meet global standards". With characters from the first game being available in this game, their outfits have been censored for the PlayStation 4 release. This led publisher Idea Factory International to ask Steam players to participate in a poll to decide on the censorship of the first game's characters.[1] The result was that characters of the first game retain their original outfits in the PC version, while the new characters are the same as seen in the PlayStation 4 version. This does not apply to event CGs or movie cinematics due to "the development cost and time to include both costume versions not being feasible".[2][3]

The game was originally intended to launch August 25, 2020 alongside the PlayStation 4 version but the release has been advanced to August 18, 2020. The game is available on Steam.

As in the first game, resolutions between 1080p and 4K remain upscaled.

Ultra-widescreen
Pillarboxed to 16:9 in exclusive fullscreen.[7]
Limited to a 16:9 window in borderless windowed.[8]
4K Ultra HD
Set through the "4K Native" resolution option.[9][10]
Every other resolution option is upscaled or downscaled from 1920x1080.[11]

Borderless fullscreen windowed
Exclusive fullscreen mode is also supported.
Anisotropic filtering (AF)
See the glossary page for potential workarounds.
Anti-aliasing (AA)
Uses Temporal Anti-Aliasing, but the option is tied to the "Post-Processing Effect" setting, which results in brightness issues when disabled.[12]
Vertical sync (Vsync)
Use Special K alongside setting "Presentation Interval" to 0 to disable Vsync.[13]
60 FPS
120+ FPS
Capped to 63 FPS. See High frame rate for more.
High dynamic range display (HDR)
See the glossary page for potential alternatives.

High frame rate

Raise the framerate cap to 240 FPS by hex editing[14][15]
  1. Go to <path-to-game>\resource\bin\
  2. Open DeathEndReQuest2.exe in a hex editor such as HxD.
  3. Search for 41 55 55 85 41 and replace with 41 71 1C 87 40.
When finding and replacing these hex values, make sure that the find/replace tools are using the "Hex-values" mode.
Alternatively, the hex value can be changed to use a custom framerate cap by dividing or multiplying the desired framerate cap by 60 (depending if the number is larger or smaller than 60), and then dividing 16.66666603 by the result of that calculation. For example, a 30 FPS cap hypothetically can be achieved by 30 / 60 = 0.5, taking the result of that calculation to do "16.66666603 / 0.5 = 33.33333206", then using HxD's replace tool's floating point number utility to find and replace the 16.66666603 value with 33.33333206.
Alternatively, this can be achieved and quickly experimented with in the game by using a Cheat Engine table.

Issues unresolved

Performance issues

Several reports indicate that performance issues are present, even on hardware that is within the listed system requirements.[18]
Lowering the in-game graphics options may not result in significant performance improvement.

Game not properly loading shaders

Under certain circumstances on specific CPUs and GPUs, the game fails to load shaders correctly, becoming unplayable.[19]

Issues fixed

Black screen on startup/Resolution limit lower than current resolution when using DPI Scaling

The game crashes when high DPI scaling is being used.
The game also limits resolution options based on the DPI Scaling settings set in Windows. For example, if a 3840x2160 resolution is being used, but DPI Scaling is set to 200%, the in-game resolution will be limited to 1920x1080.[20]
Instructions[21][22][23]
  1. Open the <path-to-game>\resource\bin directory, right click DeathEndReQuest2.exe, and go into Properties.
  2. Open the Compatibility tab, and go into Change high DPI settings.
  3. Enable Override high DPI scaling behavior and have the dropdown box set to Application.
  4. Press the OK button to exit out of the DPI properties, and then press Apply in the file properties to save changes.
