Key points

Requires adapter to connect to PC.
Lacks native XInput support, requiring the use of a XInput wrapper (see XInput wrappers) for games that do not support DirectInput or the controller natively.

Inputs

  • 4 × digital buttons: 𝐀, 𝐁, sᴛᴀʀᴛ, sᴇʟᴇᴄᴛ
  • 4 × digital directional buttons (d-pad): , , ,
  • Microphone (Famicom Controller II version)

Controller variations

Famicom Controller

Nintendo Famicom Controller II with microphone.
Nintendo Famicom Controller II with microphone.
The original model Famicom features two game controllers, both of which are hardwired to the back of the console. The second controller, Famicom Controller II, lacks the sᴛᴀʀᴛ and sᴇʟᴇᴄᴛ buttons, but features a small microphone. The earliest produced Famicom units have square 𝐀 and 𝐁 buttons. This was changed to the circular designs because of the square buttons being caught in the controller casing when pressed down and glitches within the hardware causing the system to freeze occasionally while playing a game.

NES Classic Controller

In 2016 Nintendo released replica of the original NES Controller - NES Classic Controller which is designed for use with the Nintendo Entertainment System - NES Classic Edition. It can also be plugged into a Wii Remote controller, so it's possible to use it with Virtual Console NES games on Wii or Wii U console and works with their adapters.
Controller's cord is short, only 0.91 m (3-foot).

Famicom Classic Controller

The controllers for the Japanese version are hardwired into the console just like in the original Famicom, so they cannot be used in conjunction with the Wii or PC.
The microphone on the Player 2 controller is cosmetic only and does not work.
