Essential improvements

SMOD

Mod and modding tools/resources package allowing for overhauling the game and fixing most glaring issues, including but not limited to fixing mouse issues, FOV override, head bobbing toggle, enabling debug functions, improving balance and much more.

Useful config settings

QOL Improvements[citation needed]
  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Open game.cfg with a text editor.
  3. Input any of following settings:
    • CrouchWalkUp = 0 Allow movement while crouched (disable automatic standing up)
    • QTEMode = 1/2/3 Quick Time Event mode in cutscenes (0: Inactive, 1:Normal, 3:Can't die)
    • ScorerRender = 0 Disable HUD.
    • R_SkyLightSelf = 1 Enable self-shadowing on characters.
    • R_ShadowMapsSize Adjust shadow quality (powers of 256 up to 14336)
    • R_ShowInfo = 1/2/3 Show rendering information (1 = show just FPS)

Skip intro videos

Delete/rename video folder[citation needed]
  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Open game.cfg with a text editor.
  3. Add ShowSplashScreen = 0.
  4. Go to <path-to-game>.
  5. Delete or rename the Video folder.

Stuttering may occur when looking/moving on high refresh rate monitors if fps exceeds the monitor's refresh rate. Refresh rate can be capped with Vsync or Nvidia Inspector.
High dynamic range display (HDR)
See the glossary page for potential alternatives.

Ultra-widescreen

Fix distorted aspect ratio on ultra-widescreen displays[3]
  1. Go to the save game data location location and delete or rename any save profiles. The game will recreate a save profile on starting a new game.
  2. Launch the game and go to settings. Set your aspect ratio to 4:3.
  3. Start a new campaign, then close the game after the cinematics.
  4. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  5. Open game.cfg with a text editor.
  6. Change PhysicalAspectRatio = 1.333333 to the aspect ratio of your monitor.
    • For 21:9 displays, you would use 2.333333 (21/9 = 2.333333); 4.8 for 3x16:10, 5.333333 for 3x16:9, etc.
  7. Save your changes.

Notes

Keep the in-game aspect ratio as 4:3. Changing this will discard your custom aspect ratio.

Windowed

Enable windowed mode[citation needed]
  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Open game.cfg with a text editor.
  3. Change FullScreen = 1 to FullScreen = 0
  4. Save your changes.

Notes

Runs at 640x480 by default. To fix this, make changes to any video setting and click accept.

Anisotropic filtering (AF)

Raise AF level[citation needed]
  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Open game.cfg with a text editor.
  3. Change R_Anisotropy = 2 to R_Anisotropy = 16
  4. Save your changes.

Input

Mouse sensitivity

Vertical sensitivity is significantly lower than horizontal sensitivity and cannot be adjusted in game.
Fine-tune and fix axis sensitivity difference[citation needed]
  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Open game.cfg with a text editor.
  3. Add VRotSpeed = 1.0 then adjust both MouseSensitivityV and MouseSensitivityH to your liking, 1.0 is equivalent to low ingame mouse sensitivity setting.
  4. Save your changes.

Swap primary/alternate fire

It is recommended to swap bindings for primary/alternate fire as default bindings are set to RMB for primary fire and LMB for secondary which is counterintuitive to just about any PC FPS in existence. This can be done in settings menu or in config file.
Fix questionable default bindings[citation needed]
  1. In case of config file go to configuration file
  2. Search for Mouse = <begin> # User Control definition
  3. Set Walk.MainShot.0 to But1 instead of But2
  4. Set Walk.Secondaryshot.0 to But2 instead of But1

Alternatively, console can be accessed via F11; however, its contents along with user input are invisible (using Game.Set("ShowConsoleLog", 1) will show the console output log but not user input). Game parameters can be put directly in configuration file.

Unlock cheat codes

Access to ingame cheats[citation needed]
  1. Launch the game with console enabled (see above)
  2. Enter following console input (case sensitive!): init.UnlockAllCheats()
  3. Get into Extras menu.
  4. Set all cheats to "OFF" and exit extras menu.
  5. Close the game to save the changes - cheats are now unlocked!

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/11420/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (11420) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
