Essential improvements

Patches

Patch 1.11 is the latest version.

Mods

  • Rendroc's WarZone - A list of stunning improvements ranging from a command mode similar to Hell's Highway and more effective AI to massive single player bot matches.

Skip intro videos

Instructions[citation needed]
  1. Go to <path-to-game>\Media\
  2. Delete or rename LEGAL_EN.lte and Logos.bik.

Fix texture flickering, physics issues, EAX, mouse (tested with Steam version)

This section may require cleanup to meet basic quality standards. You can help by modifying the article. The discussion page may contain useful suggestions.

Running this game without having made any modifications leads to flickering textures and major physics problems.

Instructions[citation needed]
  1. Create a shortcut from the game executable in the game "System" folder (bia.exe).
  2. Use shortcut to set compatibility mode to Windows XP Service Pack 3.
  3. Set run as administrator (not sure if this step is absolutely necessary).
  4. Use the Task Manager or better something like Process Lasso to set game executable (bia.exe) CPU affinity to a single core, preferably not the first core (core 0) as the windows system uses that.
  5. Edit User.ini file in %APPDATA%\Gearbox Software\Brothers In Arms\<user-id>\
  6. Set MouseSmoothingMode to 0.
  7. Set bEnableEAX to true.
  8. Edit bia.ini in same folder.
  9. Set DesiredRefreshRate to the refresh rate of your monitor.
  10. Set UseDefaultDriver to false (Star Wars Republic Commando - same engine - "This tells the Unreal Audio Engine to load OpenAL32.dll from the \windows\system32 folder which will result in a native OpenAL being used." - https://web.archive.org/web/20130702030043/http://connect.creativelabs.com/alchemy/Lists/Games/AllItems.aspx

Crash with garbled screen when changing resolution

Windows 10 (and possibly other versions) will also give the error "Application bia.exe blocked access to graphics hardware". This crash seems to be caused due to the intro videos.

Instructions[citation needed]
  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Open bia.ini.
  3. Edit the following to desired resolution (they should all have the same resolution, eg. X=1920, Y=1080)
  • WindowedViewportX=
  • WindowedViewportY=
  • FullscreenViewportX=
  • FullscreenViewportY=
  • MenuViewportX=
  • MenuViewportY=
  1. Follow the Skip intro videos steps.
  2. You should now be able to launch the game.

Notes

  1. SafeDisc retail DRM does not work on Windows 10[1] or Windows 11 and is disabled by default on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 when the KB3086255 update is installed.[2]
  2. 2.0 2.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/15190/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (15190) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
