Version differences
- Some retail versions use Tages DRM, which isn't completely compatible with modern OSs and systems.
- The GOG.com version has been modified to work with modern systems through the inclusion of a multi-thread wrapper.
Essential improvements
Patches

- Forcing anti-aliasing through your graphics card control panel will result (at some point during gameplay) in black screens, or corrupted graphics.[2]
Widescreen fix (Hor+)[3]
|
- Download Widescreen fix by nemesis2000.
- Extract
bge.7z files to the installation folder (password: bge).
- Edit
bge.ini to set the resolution, pillarbox, and FOV.
Notes
- Supported exe size: 7,778,304 bytes (GOG.com/Buka version), 7,819,264 bytes, 7,489,200 bytes (Uplay version).
- Does not work with Steam version.
|
Widescreen fix for Steam and new Uplay versions[4]
|
- Download the D3D injector.
- Extract it into the installation folder.
- Open
d3d9.ini and set your resolution, change bUseOverride to true, then save your changes and start the game.
Notes
- If the game shows an error message go into the
Redist folder and run DXSETUP.exe .
- If the game fails to launch with this fix, run
CheckApplication.exe in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode.
- Because the game is internally rendered in a 16:9.4 aspect ratio instead of 16:9, you will see some very small borders on both sides of the game when playing in 16:9.
- Seems to have issues with Uplay version as the image is displayed in the top left corner of the screen when antialiasing is turned on.

The instruction can be found here along with the optional Reshade preset (20 shaders with various resharpers, e.g. cross-GPU CAS implementation, and RTGI).
- Allows using additional injector in form of dxgi.dll, since d3d9.dll widescreen fix itself prevents from using Reshade (ENB injector for Reshade is incompatible with this game) |fix=

Issues fixed
Game crashes upon start with "application settings not correctly set or invalid"
Move registry folder to correct path[5]
|
- Open up regedit in admin mode
- Navigate to
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node . If you see a folder named WOW6432Node with a Ubisoft folder and a "Beyond Good and Evil" folder within it, like in https://i.imgur.com/2HQ9CW9.png , then you have a problem. There should not be a Wow64 folder within a Wow64 folder. That's too much wow!
- Move the Ubisoft folder up a level so it's a subfolder of the first wow. Unfortunately regedit does not have a "move" command through the user interface, so you will either have to recreate the Ubisoft\Beyond Good & Evil folders within the first WOW6432Node or use the command-line interface. To create a subfolder you will need to click on a folder, hover over "New", and left click on "Key". When you have re-created the two folders, the new directory structure should now be
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Ubisoft\Beyond Good & Evil
- Once you have done that wait a minute and try launching the game. You may need to launch it a couple times but it should start working after a bit.
- The fix is from Arzamol on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/beyondgoodandevil/comments/e3txc9/i_downloaded_beyond_good_and_evil_on_steam_and/f98ld8d/

Can't Alt+Tab with the GOG.com version
- Alt+Tab ↹ support is disabled by default.[6]
- MSI Afterburner's screen capture also does not work by default.
Disable compatibility fixes[7]
|
- Go to the installation folder.
- Rename
BGE.exe to something else.
- Create new shortcut to that .exe or run it directly.
Notes
- If you're already using external software to limit the frame rate or change other settings, don't forget to add the renamed executable to that software's profile as well.

Closing game/Alt+Tab/Ctrl+Alt+Del results in black screen
Force game to run in borderless windowed fullscreen mode[citation needed]
|
See Windowed.
|
Low frame rate
Change video compatibility settings[citation needed]
|
- Launch
SettingsApplication.exe .
- Click on the "Advanced Settings" tab.
- Enable "Manual compatibility settings".
- Tick all the boxes except "Autogen mipmap".
|
Use the BG&E ENB mod[8]
|
- Download BG&E ENB from ENB by CaptainSkullsaber
- Extract from .rar
- Put into <path-to-game>
Notes
- This mod also alters the color pallete, if you wish not to use the feature, just delete the
enbpalette.bmp

Texture flickering
The optimal settings for maximum modern system compatibility with the game (Method 1).
Method #1: Change video compatibility settings[citation needed]
|
- Launch
SettingsApplication.exe .
- Click on the "Advanced Settings" tab.
- Enable "Manual compatibility settings".
- Untick "HW Vertex Processing", "Multi vertex stream", and "Autogen mipmap".
Notes
- For most people simply disabling HW Vertex Processing works flawlessly, however this usually slows down the game badly even on high-end machines, which is why some prefer the second method.
|
Method #2: Disable anti-aliasing[citation needed]
|
- Launch
SettingsApplication.exe .
- Click on the "Advanced Settings" tab.
- Set "Antialiasing" to Off.
- Enable "Manual compatibility settings".
Notes
- If this doesn't work completely (some flickering still remains), the anti-aliasing can be forced (see Anti-aliasing (AA)).
|
Method #3: Enable compatibility mode[citation needed]
|
Notes
- If you are using a Steam Controller, do not select Windows XP SP3 or older, as this prevents the Steam Overlay from hooking into the game and mapping the controller correctly.
- With this setting, you can also re-enable anti-aliasing.
|
Method #4: set Maximum Pre-Rendered Frames[citation needed]
|
- If you have an Nvidia card, go to Nvidia Control Panel and change "Maximum prerendered frames" (may also be called low-latency mode) to 1 for
BGE.exe . This should remove flickering without performance penalties.
Notes
- "Manual compatibility settings" of the game should be left default.
|
Audio desynchronized in cutscenes
- If there are problems with the sound not syncing up with the picture.
Enable 60 FPS cap[citation needed]
|
|
Choose sound card[9]
|
- Launch
SettingsApplication.exe .
- Click on the "Sound settings" tab.
- Choose your sound card.
|
Set refresh rate on 60hz[citation needed]
|
Game engine runs too fast
Enable 60 FPS cap[citation needed]
|
|
Set refresh rate on 60hz[citation needed]
|
Can't change resolution or refresh rate
Enable compatibility mode[10]
|
|
Can't enable EAX reverb
Install Creative ALchemy for the game[11]
|
- Download & install ALchemy.
- Launch ALchemy
- Add a new Profile, name it Beyond Good And Evil
- Select "Use Game Path"
- Navigate to Beyond Good And Evil's install directory (For example C:\GOG Games\Beyond Good and Evil)
- Click "OK"
- Click The newly created profile and then click ">>" to enable it.
- Close ALchemy & re-open the SettingsApplication.exe for Beyond Good and Evil
- Go to the Sound tab, enable EAX Reverb.

Central Hall glitches and crashing / Triangle key doesn't drop after defeating bots
- This tool can patch save games to work around a number of common glitches encountered in the PC version, including glitches in the 'Central Hall' area, and the triangle key not falling from the vent after defeating the bots.
