Key points

The PC version is subtitled Director's Cut Edition and includes new types of investigation missions that improve game variety in comparison to the console versions. These replace some of the console missions, so the total number of available missions on PC is the same.

Issues fixed

TweakGuides has created a comprehensive guide for fixing issues in this game.
You can find various fixes in this Ubisoft Support FAQ
Ubisoft Community Technical Support

Opening video plays with no visuals on Windows 7 and later

Set compatibility mode[citation needed]
  1. Open AssassinsCreed_Dx10.exe compatibility settings.
  2. Enable compatibility mode for Windows Vista (SP2).

Steam version crashes on startup

The game will try to connect to the Ubisoft servers, which cannot be reached anymore.
Block the game's executable with the firewall[citation needed]

Character audio problem

With 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound, characters' voices can be lost or inaudible.
Switch to Stereo[citation needed]

Game audio plays, but no visuals

Swap out files[citation needed]
  1. Go to the installation folder.
  2. Swap the names of the files AssassinsCreed_Game and AssassinsCreed_Dx[version].
  3. Run the game.

Regular stutter, especially in the Kingdom

Set maximum pre-rendered frames to 1 via Nvidia Control Panel or similar[citation needed]
Edit your hosts file[6]
  1. Go to %WINDIR%\System32\drivers\etc.
  2. Open the file hosts with NotePad, and add the following IP addresses at the end:
216.98.48.18 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.53 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.57 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.133 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.134 127.0.0.1

Short freezing when killing an enemy/talking to an NPC

The game may try to connect to Ubisoft servers, which could be down, resulting in choppy audio in-game and freezing.
Edit your hosts file[citation needed]
  1. Go to %WINDIR%\System32\drivers\etc.
  2. Open the file hosts with NotePad, and add the following IP addresses at the end:
216.98.48.18 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.53 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.57 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.133 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.134 127.0.0.1
Disable your internet connection[citation needed]
You have to do this every time before playing the game.

Controller support doesn't work correctly

Assassin's Creed (and Assassin's Creed II) have problems with button mapping and recognition. Use x360ce.
Automatically installed Xbox One controller drivers have issues. Install older drivers listed below.
Use x360ce[citation needed]
A pre-made fix is available.
  1. Download x360ce and extract it into the installation folder.
  2. Run x360ce.exe and set up your controller. Save your changes.
  3. The controller should now be detected in-game.
This fix is incompatible with Windows 10, in which case x360ce will have to be re-run.
Xbox One controllers[citation needed]
  1. Download 32-bit Xbox One controller driver or 64-bit Xbox One controller driver and install.
  2. Setup a x360ce profile and drop x360ce.ini and xinput1_3.dll into the installation folder

Game always starts up in windowed mode

By default, the game should run in fullscreen mode. However, occasionally, the game forces itself into windowed mode.
Return to fullscreen mode with Alt+ Enter[citation needed]
Use the -fullscreen command line argument[citation needed]

Crash when installed in a Storage Space

The game will refuse to run when installed on a drive which is managed by a Storage Space on Windows 8 and later.
Re-installing the Game on a drive that is not a Storage Space will fix this issue[citation needed]

Leap of Faith jumps result in death

In addition to visual glitches, playing with more than 60 FPS causes the Leap of Faith jumps to not work correctly, leading to the player characters death upon impact.
Enable Vsync in the graphics settings or force it in the graphics card control panel[7]

Notes

  2. 2.0 2.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/15100/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (15100) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
