StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is the sequel to the original StarCraft game by Blizzard which found massive success as a computer game but also as an electronic sport, especially in Korea, and also the first installment to a trilogy. It is a real time strategy game based around collecting resources, building an army and clashing with an opponent or opponents. The most popular game mode is 1 versus 1, but there are team modes as well as custom games.

Versions

Currently, only the Wings of Liberty volume of the game is available. The second section of the game, Heart of the Swarm is likely to be released in late 2012/early 2013, but Blizzard has really only said that they would be releasing the game "soon". Legacy of the Void, the third and final part has not had any release date hinted at so far.

System Requirements

StarCraft works on Windows computers as well as on Mac computers.

Minimum:

  • CPU: 2.6 GHz Pentium® IV or equivalent AMD Athlon® processor
  • RAM: 1GB (1.5GB for Windows Vista or Windows 7 users)
  • HDD: 300 MB free space
  • Video: 128 MB PCIe NVIDIA® GeForce® 6600 GT or ATI Radeon® 9800 PRO video card or better
  • Multiplayer: Broadband Internet connection

Recommended:

  • CPU: Dual Core 2.4Ghz Processor
  • RAM: 2GB
  • HDD: 300 MB free space
  • Video: 512 MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800 GTX or ATI Radeon® HD 3870 or better

StarCraft will automatically detect the optimal graphics settings for your computer the first time you run it, but these are always adjustable.

Default StarCraft 2 folder

(Your documents folder)\StarCraft II\Accounts\Your account number(ie.106293384)\

Note that there are also shortcuts in the \StarCraft II\ folder that are named as account character names that you've already logged into from that computer, that link directly to that account's folder. This is handy for quick access to replays.

This folder contains:

  • Variables.txt - Stores several of your personal settings
  • Hotkey folder - Contains a file for each set of custom hotkeys you may have created up
  • Another folder that contains replays, saved games, screenshots and other locally saved data

Patches

Patches for this game should be downloaded and installed automatically when the game is run after a patch has been released. Note that this requires an internet connection - you will not be able to play online without having the most recent patch, although one can always play offline if patching is impossible. If the automatic patching doesn't work, you can manually download the patches here: http://us.blizzard.com/support/article/sc2patch. These contain all patches up to the latest patch number listed in one - so if you download the patch listed, you get all prior patches as well.
