Key points
- Requires adapter to connect to PC.
- Lacks native XInput support, requiring the use of a XInput wrapper (see XInput wrappers) for games that do not support DirectInput or the controller natively.
- Mega Drive control pads are the logical progression from Master System control pads, replacing 1 and 2 with π and π respectively, while adding an extra two face buttons, π and sα΄α΄Κα΄ to bring the total number of buttons to four.
- The controller connects to the system via a DE-9 port.
Inputs
- 4 Γ digital buttons: π, π, π, sα΄α΄Κα΄
- 4 Γ digital directional buttons (d-pad): β, β, β, β
Controller variations
- The Sega Mega Drive Control Pad (γ³γ³γγγΌγ«γγγ) is the official controller of the Sega Mega Drive (or Sega Genesis in North America). Three button controllers are known officially as Control Pads in both North America and Europe, and SJ-3500s in Japan (following a system set up by the SG-1000). There are many "updates" and alternatives to this controller, the most notable being the Six Button Control Pad. This article covers only the basic three button variants.
- The Six Button Control Pad became the de facto controller for the Sega Mega Drive, replacing the standard Control Pad internationally around 1993/1994. It is officially known as the 6 Button Arcade Pad in North America and the Fighting Pad 6B (γγ‘γ€γγ£γ³γ°γγγ6B) in Japan.
Inputs
- 1 Γ analog stick
- 1 Γ digital shoulder buttons:: α΄α΄α΄ α΄
- 7 Γ digital buttons: π, π, π, π, π¬, π, sα΄α΄Κα΄
- 4 Γ digital directional buttons (d-pad): β, β, β, β
- In September 2021, when Nintendo 64 games and Sega Genesis titles were added to Nintendo Switch Online alongside the Expansion Pack, wireless Nintendo 64 Controllers and SEGA Genesis Control Pads were released for use with their respective services.
